In a surprising announcement that has left many in the travel community buzzing, Aer Lingus has revealed its plans to close the Manchester Airport base by March 31st. This decision, confirmed to employees on Wednesday, marks a significant shift for the Irish airline, which currently operates flights to various destinations in the United States and Barbados from this British hub, employing approximately 200 pilots and cabin crew members.
The airline informed its staff and the relevant unions that all operations would come to a complete halt starting from the end of March. Specifically, Aer Lingus will discontinue its Manchester-New York flights as of February 23rd, 2026. However, to assist those affected by these changes, the airline is working to provide a service connecting Dublin to Barbados during the months of April and May, contingent on obtaining the necessary approvals. Notably, services linking Ireland with Manchester, including Aer Lingus Regional flights, will remain unaffected by this closure.
For customers who have bookings through Manchester, Aer Lingus is proactively notifying them about the cancellation of their flights and offering options for rebooking or refunds. The airline is also committed to ongoing discussions with its employees and their unions regarding potential redeployment opportunities and the terms surrounding severance packages at the Manchester location.
Since November, Aer Lingus has been engaging with its workforce about the possibility of this closure, although it had not previously confirmed that this would be the final outcome. Earlier this month, the airline hinted that staff might have the chance to relocate to other positions within Aer Lingus or its parent company, IAG, which also owns major airlines such as Iberia and British Airways, or they could face redundancy.
The carrier initiated its services from Manchester to popular destinations like New York, Orlando, Florida, and Bridgetown, Barbados, back in 2021. Recently, the CEO, Lynne Embleton, indicated that the performance of the Manchester base had not met expectations, despite the company asserting that the operations themselves were profitable, albeit with lower profit margins compared to other parts of its business.
