A rollercoaster of emotions, contracts, and second thoughts – that's the story of Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr.'s recent journey. After initially announcing his intention to transfer, just days after signing a contract to stay, Williams has now reversed course, much to the relief of Husky fans.
On Tuesday, Williams declared his plans to enter the transfer portal. This came as a surprise, considering he'd inked a deal with Washington only four days prior. But, in a surprising turn of events, Williams announced on Thursday that he would remain at the University of Washington, stating his decision came "after thoughtful reflection with my family." This about-face ended a whirlwind two-day saga that had fans and analysts alike on the edge of their seats.
But here's where it gets controversial... Williams had already signed a contract with Washington in early January, agreeing to return to the Huskies. A source close to the negotiations revealed this information. Despite this agreement, Williams initially declared his intention to transfer via social media. Washington's response was swift and decisive. Sources indicated the program had "no intention" of releasing Williams from his contract and was prepared to take legal action to enforce its terms.
Then, on Thursday night, ESPN reported that Williams was "leaning toward returning," and a Washington source confirmed the program's willingness to welcome him back. Shortly thereafter, both Head Coach Jedd Fisch and Athletic Director Patrick Chun released statements confirming Williams' return. Fisch emphasized the importance of their conversations, stating they both agreed Washington was the best place for Williams' development. Chun highlighted the broader implications, calling the situation "emblematic of the many current issues in college sports," particularly regarding the enforcement of contracts in the new revenue-sharing environment.
And this is the part most people miss... Leaving Washington after signing a contract could have been financially costly for Williams. The Big Ten uses a revenue-share contract template, which, depending on state laws and individual negotiations, could have meant Williams owed the remaining amount on his contract if he transferred before the end of a payment period. In Williams' case, based on these templates, he could have owed Washington a staggering $4 million for his one-year deal! The buyout could also have impacted his next school's revenue-sharing cap.
However, it’s unclear if such contracts would hold up in court. Williams sought legal counsel, but it appears the matter won't be challenged. A similar case involving former Georgia defensive end Damon Wilson II, who sued Georgia's athletic association over a $390,000 transfer fee, is still ongoing. Big Ten officials reassured athletic directors of their support for Washington in enforcing the contract.
Williams' journey to Seattle with Fisch began two years ago, following his commitment to Arizona out of high school. Before Arizona, he had initially committed to Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin in late 2022, de-committing the following summer. Williams started the 2025 season, with Fisch expressing high praise for his quarterback. Fisch even went as far as saying, "I would probably say, at this age, not even 19, he’s the best player I’ve ever been around." His goal was to get Williams to New York City for the Heisman.
Williams' stats are impressive. He has thrown for 4,009 yards and 33 touchdowns with only 9 interceptions, and added 893 rushing yards and 8 rushing touchdowns in 26 career games at Washington. In his first season as the starter, he passed for 3,065 yards and 25 touchdowns, earning All-Big Ten honorable mention honors.
