Day 18: Heavy Packs, Light Hearts, and a Surprising Phone Call
The journey continues, and today's trek from Long Trail Inn to Snomobile Trail Campsite was a challenging one, to say the least. With packs weighing anywhere from 28 to 35 pounds, we were feeling the strain, but the experience was still magical. The trail, as expected, offered its fair share of obstacles, with roots and rocks testing our balance and determination.
One unexpected moment came when my phone rang, a rare occurrence as I usually keep it in airplane mode. It was a surprising call from the Long Trail Inn, informing me that I had left my wallet behind. A quick dash back to the inn retrieved my precious possession, a relief considering the potential consequences of losing it. With the wallet safely in hand, we continued our journey, our focus now on reaching Maine Junction.
The junction is a significant point on the trail, where hikers have the option to head east towards Katahdin, north towards Canada, or explore the various directions the North Country National Scenic Trail offers. It's a moment of decision, a crossroads where the trail's vastness becomes apparent. Despite the heavy packs, we pressed on, squirming under the weight but determined to reach our destination.
A much-needed break allowed us to filter water, a moment of tranquility amidst the hike. The blue sky and white clouds provided a peaceful backdrop as we relaxed and enjoyed the simple pleasures of nature. Identifying a suitable camp spot was a priority, and we found a promising location where a snowmobile trail intersected the LT.
As we climbed, we were greeted by a familiar face - our Trail Grandson, Seeker. His presence brought joy and a sense of camaraderie. We shared stories and caught up on each other's adventures, making the climb more enjoyable. The camp arrived in good time, and we were delighted to find space to set up our tents without the usual Tetris-like struggle.
The night was a peaceful one, with everyone settled in their beds by 8 p.m. The happiness of having Seeker back on the trail outweighed the burden of our heavy packs. It was a reminder that the true joy of long-distance hiking lies in the company of fellow adventurers and the shared experiences along the way.
Despite the challenges, the day's journey was a testament to our resilience and the beauty of the trail. As we continued our trek, we embraced the weight of our packs as a symbol of our dedication to the adventure, knowing that the memories and friendships forged along the way would be our greatest treasures.
