Madison Keys recently stepped up to support Coco Gauff following the incident where Gauff smashed her racket at the Australian Open, declaring that the young athlete absolutely deserves a private space to express her emotions.
After enduring a challenging match and losing decisively with scores of 1-6, 2-6 against Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, Gauff found herself overwhelmed with frustration. In a moment of anger, she broke her racket in a hallway at the Rod Laver Arena.

Being a prominent figure with a significant following, especially among younger fans, Gauff was hesitant to express her frustration publicly on the court, fearing it would send a negative message. However, despite her best intentions, her outburst was caught on camera, leading to widespread viewership across the tennis community.
In the aftermath of this viral incident, many fans rallied behind Gauff, commending her for choosing to vent her frustrations away from the public eye. This situation has prompted discussions among players about the need for more private areas during tournaments.
Keys, who celebrated her own Grand Slam victory at the previous yearâs Australian Open, expressed her thoughts on the matter during an interview on The Player's Box. While she appreciates the presence of cameras in certain areasâwhich can enhance content and showcase players' personalitiesâshe strongly advocates for designated private spaces where players can freely decompress without the scrutiny of cameras.
"I donât mind cameras being set up in specific locations; they contribute greatly to the content and personality of the sport. However, I truly believe that there should be a few more areas where players can have some solitude," Keys explained. "It's clear that Coco wanted to avoid smashing her racket on the court and sought out a private area for a post-match outburst, something that every player is entitled to. There should definitely be safe spaces available where no cameras are present, allowing for a hard surface to release their frustrations."
Moving forward, Gauff is likely to take this experience as a lesson, being more mindful of her actions once she steps off the court.
