Miss Finland's Crown Revoked Following Racist Gesture
Sarah Dzafce, a beauty queen with Kosovan heritage through her father, was crowned Miss Finland in September. However, her reign was cut short after a controversial incident.
On Thursday, the Miss Finland organization announced at a press conference that Dzafce would be stripped of her title. The decision came after a photograph of Dzafce making an apparent racist gesture was shared on social media, sparking widespread outrage.
In the image, Dzafce is seen pulling her eyes into a slanted shape with her fingers, accompanied by a caption in Finnish that translates to 'eating with a Chinese person.' This gesture was widely interpreted as a mockery of Asian people, causing a social media uproar.
Dzafce initially defended the gesture, claiming it was due to a severe headache and rubbing her temples. However, the Miss Finland organization, committed to anti-racism and inclusivity, issued a strong statement on Wednesday, condemning any form of racism or discriminatory behavior.
On Thursday, the organization expressed deep regret for the incident and announced Dzafce's removal from the title. As a result, Tara Lehtonen, the runner-up in the September competition, will take on the role of Miss Finland.
Dzafce, born in Oulu and residing in Kuopio, has a Kosovan father and a Finnish mother. She expressed her remorse, stating, 'I am very sorry to everyone I have offended and hurt by my actions on social media.' The incident has sparked a necessary conversation about the importance of cultural sensitivity and the consequences of racist behavior in the beauty industry.
