Nova Southeastern Women's Team Shatters NCAA DII Record in 200 Freestyle Relay
In a thrilling display of swimming prowess, the Nova Southeastern women's team broke the Division II record in the 200 freestyle relay at the Sunshine State Conference Championships on Saturday. The team's remarkable performance not only set a new standard but also showcased the incredible talent and dedication of its swimmers.
The quartet of Zsofia Kurdi, Kristina Orban, Maxine Egner, and Maya Esparza combined their skills to achieve an extraordinary feat. They clocked an impressive 1:30.04, surpassing the previous record by a mere 0.01 seconds. This achievement is all the more remarkable considering the team's competitive pace throughout the race, which was under the record pace set by Queens in 2018.
Here's a breakdown of the swimmers' splits:
- Zsofia Kurdi: 23.01
- Kristina Orban: 22.33
- Maxine Egner: 22.39
- Maya Esparza: 22.31
These splits highlight the exceptional individual contributions of each swimmer, with Kurdi's leadoff being notably faster than her previous performance in the individual 50 free.
Orban, the reigning D2 Champion in the 200 free, demonstrated her prowess by finishing just under two-tenths faster than her best time and nearly four-tenths faster than her individual event win on Friday. Egner's performance on the third leg was equally impressive, as she went over half a second better than her previous time, marking her first time breaking the 23-second barrier.
Esparza closed the race with a time that was nearly half a second quicker than her individual event finish, with her personal best remaining at 22.73, achieved at the Kelliane Nagy Fall Frenzy Invite in November.
Nova Southeastern's success extends beyond this record-breaking performance. They placed third in the same event at last year's championships but are the defending champions in the 400 and 800 free relays. The team currently leads in the Division II rankings for the 400 free, 800 free, and 200 medley relays, while holding the 9th position in the 400 medley relay.
This season, Nova Southeastern has already made waves by breaking another Queens record. In January, the same quartet of swimmers took down the 2018 NCAA record in the 400 free relay, shaving 0.12 seconds off the mark. They have the opportunity to further enhance their records in the 400 free relay at the conference meet's conclusion on Sunday evening.
As the conference meet progresses, Nova Southeastern is making a strong case for reclaiming the conference title, having fallen to second place last year. However, their primary focus is on the upcoming NCAA Division II Championships, where they aim for a four-peat. According to the Swimulator, their top-end depth gives them a slight advantage over Tampa, making them a favorite to defend their title.
The team's remarkable achievements and their pursuit of excellence serve as an inspiration to aspiring swimmers, demonstrating the power of hard work and dedication in achieving greatness in the pool.
