The Pakistan Cricket Board has unveiled significant structural changes to the Pakistan Super League (PSL), sparking both excitement and debate among cricket enthusiasts. The most notable shift is the replacement of the traditional player draft system, introduced at the league's inception in 2016, with a more transparent player auction process. This new approach aims to boost fairness and competitiveness across the teams. Additionally, the total salary purse for franchises has been increased from USD 1.3 million to USD 1.6 million, providing clubs with a larger financial pool to assemble stronger squads.
Salman Naseer, the CEO of PSL, emphasized that these reforms are designed to support the league's ongoing development, making it more dynamic, competitive, and innovative. He explained that transitioning from a draft to an auction format will improve transparency and foster a more level playing field, allowing teams to bid openly for players. This change also aims to offer cricketers better earning opportunities, potentially elevating their professional prospects.
One of the more significant adjustments involves the player retention rule. Previously, each franchise could retain up to eight players, including a mentor and a brand ambassador, with the option to retain a ninth player through a right-to-match (RTM) clause during the draft. Under the new system, franchises can now retain only four players, with restrictions to one player per category, removing the mentor, brand ambassador, and RTM options entirely. This move is intended to enhance team flexibility and competitiveness.
The announcement also clarified that the newly added teams, Hyderabad and Sialkot, will each have the opportunity to select four players from an initial pool before the auction. Furthermore, teams will be permitted one direct signing of a foreign player who did not participate in PSL 10, offering strategic opportunities to enhance squad strength with new international talent.
