The Perfect Start: Logan Webb's Dominant Display
In a thrilling Cactus League opener, Logan Webb showcased his prowess, striking out four Los Angeles Angels batters in two perfect innings. This performance sets the stage for his upcoming World Baseball Classic adventure.
"I've had my fair share of struggles in the past with my first outing," Webb admitted. "But facing Mike Trout in my second at-bat of spring training? That's a challenge I'm glad to take on."
However, a curious incident occurred when Baseball Savant listed Webb's second pitch as an astonishing 111.8 mph! A record-breaking moment, if it were true. Webb, amused, simply laughed it off.
"Nice try!" he exclaimed. "But I know my pitches, and that one wasn't quite that fast."
Manager Tony Vitello confirmed that Webb is expected to have one more start with the Giants before joining Team USA. His next appearance is scheduled for Sunday against the San Diego Padres.
From there, Webb joins his fellow Americans, with a potential opening match against Brazil in Houston. While he didn't confirm his starting role, Webb expressed his availability for multiple starts if the United States progresses.
In contrast, Tarrik Skubal, a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner, will only make one appearance for Team USA before returning to the Tigers. Skubal, who recently won an arbitration case, is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, a decision Webb understands.
"I'm not in his position. I've got three years left on my contract, but he's got just one before free agency. I get his thinking, but it's his choice."
The Giants will host Team USA at Scottsdale Stadium on March 4, where Webb aims to face his teammates. This event follows closely after the Winter Olympics, where the U.S. broke records with 12 gold medals.
One memorable moment was Alysa Liu, from Oakland, becoming the first American woman to win Olympic gold in figure skating since 2002. The hockey teams also shone, with Giants fans chanting "U-S-A" after Jack Hughes' overtime goal against Canada.
"It's perfect timing," Webb said. "We get inspired by our Olympic heroes, and now I get to be one of them. It's an honor and a privilege."
Vitello added, "It's like playoff intensity. The fans are engaged, and as coaches, we see the importance of every play. It's an exciting atmosphere."
In other news, Landen Roupp, who secured the fifth spot in the Giants' rotation last spring, had a solid debut, striking out two in a scoreless inning. Roupp, alongside Webb, Ray, Houser, and Mahle, aims to make 30 starts this season.
"I have a soft spot for Roupp," Webb said. "We often compete, especially with our changeups. I hope he joins me on Team USA one day."
Roupp, confident, replied, "I'm working on my changeup, striving to match Webb's. I think I got him on the velo today!"
Notably, catcher Patrick Bailey had an impressive outing with a double, a sacrifice fly, and a walk. Catcher Jesus Rodriguez also impressed, playing second base and making a sliding play in right field, praised by Vitello as an "excellent play."
Bailey's exit velocities were impressive, reaching 109.7 mph on his double and 107.1 mph on his sacrifice fly.
Rodriguez's versatility and skill at second base were on full display.
